Yes it is. However Niceguy is just stating his opion so next year its not an issue.. Guys were complaining because he sent a guy home on a group ride because he had little to no gear on.... This way everyone knows where he stands.. I tend to agree.. If you don't want to wear gear then get away from my group ride..

I support an individules choice to do with their own body whatever they want as long as it doesnt physically effect me. I would SUGGEST that everyone wear proper gear when doing what we do though. Most of you have families to make it home to. I for one like the idea of having less pain if I DID crash with gear on than I would otherwise in a pair of shorts and flipflops. But hey, thats just common sense...some of us seem to lack the gene that produces this.

On a serious note, I'm a huge supporter of an individual's autonomy or freedom to chose what s/he does with his/her life. However, when it comes to whether or not someone wears gear when riding motorcycles, it quickly becomes a very complex issue.
While it might not "physically" affect me when someone else crashes, it can very quickly affect all of us, financially, legally, and in a host of other ways.
Riders who say it's their body and their right to choose because it doesn't affect anyone else are simply wrong unless they are able to pay all of their health care expenses out of pocket and never file an insurance claim and they fall on a closed course somewhere so that they don't have to file an accident report. Otherwise, their crash can and will affect all of us who ride because we are all part of the insurance pool that pays for each others' mistakes. Those who don't have enough private insurance coverage soon end up on government assistance. Those who sustain head injuries because they refused to wear a real helmet (read: full face certified to the latest standards) are almost guaranteed to end up receiving government assistance and costing everyone who pays taxes more money.
I don't have time to fully articulate all of the issues involved with this so, suffice it to say that I am of the opinion that you need to buy and wear the best gear that you can afford. I survived tumbling 280 feet down the road after crashing at something between 100 and 120 mph because I was wearing really good gear. Wear your gear.
I completely support anyone who excludes someone from a group ride because the person isn't wearing proper gear. Remember, jeans completely wear through in 1/10th of one second (which is also the same amount of time that a front tire can skid before the rider has to let off the brake or the front wheel tucks). After the jeans burn through, your skin goes away next, then bone... On your knee, you can be into bone in less than 1/2 a second.
