I recall several of the things I got away with when I was driving tow trucks so I can see both sides. I would have smiled and said thanks for just a speeding cite for a couple of those. I've also noticed that my CHL tends to get me out of some minor things.

It's all good I guess. Although if I was a cop I'd be tempted to actually try and hope to make the "Dick of the Month" club. And, yes, after I would wear it like a badge of honor. Professional courtesy doesn't mean a warning for 100+ in a 35 but maybe a cite for 49.

As far as the tickets go I am not going to even say anything since I will get flammed.

I'd like to think that the people who post here shouldn't have to wear their asbestos underoos just to log in. Freedom of thought and opinion and very much respected here. Flaming won't be tolerated so tell us how you really feel. It's how we get to know each other in the digital world.

I understand that, but as BMW guy pointed out, when I see them pull into convenience store or fast food parking lots 100 yards down the road, it makes me wonder. A few bad apples who take advantage of their position can leave a bad taste...

Speaking of which, anyone have an opinion on this:
http://www.copswritingcops.com/dotm/oct2006/index.html

It's possible someone would do that to go to the 7-11, but it's more likely that he was going somewhere, got cancelled, and then pulled in to grab a quick drink, snack, or restroom break before the nagging radio gave him yet another call. We take our breaks at the whim of the radio and sometimes we have to get creative to squeeze them in.

I've had just as many times when I've ordered food, paid for it, gotten a hot call, and had to run out before I got my food. That means no food, and no refund.

Ok, I got pulled over today on a school zone riding my bike (doing 35 on a 25) . Good news is , I just got a warning:rad: . Now my question is -Do cops know if you have a CHL when they run your plates? I notice that twice now one was about a year ago then today. He asked me again if I was carrying a weapon. I have CHL but barely carry my Hand gun. Just wondering. Looks like if you have CHL and got pulled over, it takes awhile for them to approach you? Last time he even call for back up. Or is just because I'm fugly?.....Mep?

In your case I'd say because you're asian and you have shifty eyes. You look like the poster child for the Filipino mafia.

In all other instances your drivers license is flagged with a notation or something in the system that you have a CHL. When an officer runs your plate in preparing for a stop the dispatcher will run the license status for the registered owner thats when the notation will show up.

I just hand over my CHL with my DL and paperwork. I keep all my credit cards/ID's in a leather card holder in my left front pocket so I can get it out without reaching anywhere near my pistol. The few odd times that I didn't hand it over or tell the officer that I had one even though I wasn't carryiing the officer asked me 3-5 times if i was carrying (I said no everytime) and then handed me my BS citation for some stupid thing (seat belt, burnt out tail light, etc) I have NEVER recieved a citation while I was carrying.

mep what is the difference between lazer radar and normal?? and what makes lazer better?

B, Laser isn't radar, it's laser... as in laser beam. The "normal" that you speak of is radar, high frequency sound waves.

Does that explain it enough for you to answer the rest of your question?

Or do I need to explain elementary skool science about the speed of light vs. the speed of sound. I'll include a summary of lasers "pin-point" accuracy and dispersal of soundwaves at no charge.

so the neighbor a few houses down likes to think the curbside parking spot in front of his townhouse belongs to him.

Anytime someone else takes that spot he'll leave a note on the car, park his big obnoxious truck an inch from the bumper, or even come knock on our door and ask us to move the car...

Anything I can do to shut his stupid face up?

Mr.Demise
03-12-2008, 02:25 PM
SURE! Next time he comes over tell him to get the fug away from your door before you call the cops for harasing you. IF there is no sign stating the rules of parking, its fair game. First come first serve.

MarineHawk
03-12-2008, 04:46 PM
I like taking timed/dated pictures when my neighbors decide that since my parking space is so empty (because my motorcycle sits there), they can just park halfway into it, as well as their own. Since yours also leaves notes, I would start saving them as well, then if he decides to do something dumb after telling him to "fug off", you can prove that it was him that did it, too.

In that case you have to look at it as "Might makes right".

In alot of cases in the downtown/lloyd center areas including MLK and several other streets the lanes are only 8' wide and the standard size for trailers nowdays is 8-1/2' wide. While not staying in the lane is against the law technically there are areas where it's physically impossible to be completely in one lane.

And if traffic is giving me a bad time I'll purposly drive in two and let anybody who doesn't like it discuss the matter with my front bumper.

I guess down here in NM you dont have to ware a helmet but you have to but both feet down to be a full stop so he got a $250 for not putting hes feet down at a stop and was not sure how oregon is so who better to ask then you?

DAMN IT so i need to get liability for myself even though i don't have a bike. Right?

Maybe it's just State Farm and its greatness, but I know for a fact that in Oregon, as long as the vehicle is insured, it does not matter who drives/rides it. They just have to have the owner's/insured person's permission (or else it's theft, duh).

In Washington, you need to have coverage on your own vehicle in order for someone else's insurance to cover you given the same situation. That only works motorcycle->motorcycle, not car->motorcycle however.

If you werent doing anything too inexcusable:

If I see the officer and I know without a doubt he wants to talk to me, I will pull right up to him and stop so he doesnt have to chase me. That alone has gotten me out of at least two tickets.

ALWAYS have a respectful attitude. Yes sir no sir Im sorry, wasnt paying attention etc...

MarineHawk
04-05-2008, 12:53 PM
Don't -play- dumb, either. Cops know you know you were speeding, and the whole "I didn't realize it was only 45" doesn't work, unless you actually didn't know, otherwise it's an easy act to see through.

I'd also recommend removing your helmet/gloves once you've stopped. I know this seems like a duh kinda thing, but I've seen so many motorcyclists pulled over who don't until/unless they're instructed. It's moreso just to reassure the cop you're more likely not to run, and it is along the lines of removing your sunglasses to talk to someone (as I see it), a sign of respect.

Biggest bit of advice is to never ask for a warning. Hate it when people do that. The longer the officer has on the job the greater the chance you will get off, younger officers write everybody... So does the traffic division.

Define restrict... If you mean can you get in trouble for parking in front of the mailbox with your car, forcing them to get their fat @$$ out and walk, I am quite sure the answer is no. Unless they are driving a postal service delivery vehicle, you are not obligated to move your car, provided that parking in the area in question does not violate other laws (yellow curb, fire hydrant, no parking sign, etc...).

Last I checked, there really isn't anything a postal delivery driver can do either. I remember a case were some home owner would part his car in front of the mail box, so the postal carrier would have to get out and walk around. The home owner then proceed to video tape the postal carrier spit on his car, and turned the tape over as evidence that he was in fact a victim. (FYI: that would be called entrapment, if a leo did it.)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I understand it.

No I mean restrict access by not allowing other roommates access to the one and only mailbox key.

OR

Having the mailbox lock changed in order to restrict other roommates from accessing the mailbox.

US Code mostly just covers the destruction, vandalism, etc etc of mailboxes, and carries some rather hefty fines...up to $50,000 fine and 10 years of prison. ****.

Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705

Also, I found some good info here, all backed up by bits of USC (US Code) http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mmailbox.htm

Wow, that was informative. Thank you.

As for you Nicegy525, I would not hold your roommates mail for ransom or in any way keep them from having access to it. For the simple reason that you could be sued for the costs associated with any unpaid bills that your roommates may receive. I would think that you could go to the post office and file for a change of address. Tell them that you would like any mail intended for you to be put in mailbox number 2. Then install a second keyed mailbox, just for you. I'm not sure on the specifics, but it seems like this would be a legitimate request.

Good luck w/ the roommates. :whipit

Just write "Deceased" on their incoming mail and put it in the outgoing.

Last I heard there was no ID required to put a hold on somebody's mail at the post office. Fill out the form and turn it in. The office will hold the mail for months if nobody finds out.

Not that I would advocate either of thsoe two things... that would be wrong and something I would not condone. I'm simply stating that someone could do that.

If she's interfering with your mail that is a federal offense. Call the postmaster and report the crime, them politely push the issue.

MarineHawk
04-09-2008, 05:38 PM
Yeah, exactly what Flyte just said, witholding your mail like that could easily be construed as tampering with/invading/etc, and a call to the Postmaster and/or the police should take care of the issue.

Then again, I've never been one to call in the authorities for stuff, and prefer to talk with someone at least once, face-to-face before resorting to that. Might be worth a try, and you can always let them know the repercussions that exist.

I had the box re-keyed with a new lock and three keys so each of us have our own copy and roommates have been warned that any action taken to prevent anyone from having access will be reported and possible legal action taken.

Well if your roommate is concerned about the other roommate, she should have no problem getting you a copy of the key*, or giving you the only copy. So you don't have to ask permission.

*The key she has may be labeled "Do Not Duplicate," but most younger workers at Wali-world type hardware stores might not care.

EDIT: I was just a bit late this post. ;)

I asked a LEO the same question once. He told me he was feeling the car for a few reasons; to feel if there might be some movement in the car that he could not see, also to feel for if the car was running. Lastly, he was leaving his finger prints on the car. So that in the event that the car should flee, they could prove that it was the same car that was pulled over.

So I have a question for the polices

So lets say I have this friend and he's interested in these fancy radar detector things you hear about for bikes. Whats the deal with them? I see them in cars everywhere hell I have one in my truck. Now you see them with detector-detector abilities with GPS and the whole bit. My friend has even found these radar jammer gizmo's that I would think would be illegal but I don't know. :eek2: I mean my "friend" doesn't know

Anyway, what is the down & dirty with the Radar detectors, detector detectors, Jammer's, and the use of them? I get the whole band thing with K, KA, X, Laser, blah blah blah my friend is more curious about the legality/politics of it all

Eric, I'm not a LEO, but I do have some info.

Where to start?

Detectors:
It sounds like you already know about detectors. So I will only skim over them.
Detectors are legal in Oregon and can be relatively useful. Although, I would only ever use one detector, and that is the Valentine 1, hands down the best radar/laser detector on the market.

Radar Jammers (see note about the "Rocky Mountain" radar jammer*):

Real radar jammers are highly illegal, and relatively ineffective, because most if not all modern police radar will detect the "jamming" interference and alert the LEO that the radar is being jammed. It is against the law to emit any form of radio signal from your vehicle, intended to interfere with police radar. So just don't go there.

*The "Rocky Mountain" radar jammers that are sometimes advertised on the radio and internet sites, are COMPLETELY FAKE. Google "rocky mountain radar scam" to get the details. Just old fashioned snake oil. The line they give about paying for your ticket is a scam. The terms and conditions they try not to mention, are that if you get a ticket for going more than 15% over the posted limit, they won't pay. Well in a 55 15% is only 8.25 MPH. So you would have to get a ticket for less than 63 in a 55, which doesn't happen often. Or a ticket for going 34MPH in a 30MPH zone. SCAM!! :shifty:

Laser Jammers:

Here is where things get interesting. There is no easy way for a legislature to outlaw devices that emit light from a car, that could interfere with police laser equipment. Unless they wanted to outlaw all vehicle lighting, like headlights. So the short answer is that, some laser jammers work, but they are not 100%. Also most laser jammers are designed to deactivate for a predetermined amount of time, after a police laser signal is detected and "jammed." This is to allow the LEO to get a solid reading, after the driver has had enough time to slow down the vehicle to a more reasonable speed. Most quality laser jammers are pretty pricy. Usually they are sold in kits that include, two laser jammer signal emitters for the front of the car, and one single jammer for the rear. The driver receive a visual and audible signal when the unit detects the laser signal from the LEO, it is then up to the driver to take evasive measures to slow down, without being obvious, or causing a collision with other vehicles. Unlike with radar, where a detector can alert to speed patrols up to a mile or more away, laser jammers will only alert to lasers being fired at you. So the officer has already made a judgment about your relative speed. Not likely you will get away with cursing at 110 MPH down I5. :smilewink:

Hope this answers some of your questions, Eric.

Yes it does; thanks  Tom. I did some more searching and found a post that MEP made about detectors and the use of them. He said "You can't get a ticket for having one. However your sh*t better be in order cause you might get one for everything else wrong" Which I believe very much to be true...

I was never really into the idea of a jammer. And you're absolutely right about the scams. I get a kick out of some of the disclosures out there. :haha:

I really like the V1. I was surprised to see that they actually bad mouth the other one I was looking at the SOLO S2... I want the convenience of a cordless but don't want to sacrifice performance... Go figure hu  I'm not crazy about hard wiring a detector on my bike that will only be there part time... And it's got to have an audio out "headphone jack"... I found an audio module for the V1 but ouch I'm running out of money :crying: $448 is going to be to much money for me to justify it.

I think through all of this though I've decided that I'll hard wire a detector in and try to make it as convenient as possible... I got a quote from a guy yesterday; $300 for the Passport 8500 X50. Seams to be a good detector. Not as nice as the V1 for sure. Yet light years ahead of my Walmart special Cobra I bought like five years ago...

As far as integrated tail lights, I was pretty sure (when I had it done) that its legal in Oregon. However, I know it isn't that way in all states. Fender eliminators just get people into trouble because they typically angle the plate to much and cops ding you on the unreadability of it straight on yadda yadda.

Flyte Risk
06-24-2009, 06:54 AM
Federal law requires (as well as most states including OR) that the turn signals be a specific distance away from the center of the tail light. I think it's 4 or 5 inches. That requirement effectively makes integrated signals illegal.
