This weekend we are heading up to my gf's parents to watch superbowl and to shoot. But we can try to arrange something after that?

Do you feel like you should be wearing black pajamas when you shoot your AK?

I have an AK-47, two AK-74s (one is a sidefolder, the other in black polymer furniture), a Centurian Arms HK-91 clone, a Remington 870 w/8-round mag, a S&W .357, a Glock 20, a Glock 17, a Browning Hi-Power, a Springfield Armory 1911, a .22 rifle, and several .22 pistols/revolvers. Can I come along on the target shoot? (I look really cute in black pajamas)

Is it safe to say, you like 7.62???:haha: A couple years ago I had to check in about 50 mil spec 870's. I believe they just came with a rail system is all. Since you have a Springfield 1911 (.45) check these guys out for bulk ammo. http://www.bvac-ammo.com/ Local supplier for BVAC: https://surplusammo.com/index.phpmain_page=product_info&cPath=22_28&products_id=650&zenid=bbe811e765005fd209a4bdebeb736d8d
BVAC is made in Montana...not in Russia, Bulgaria or Hungary. I think they also make 7.62x39

Not as much as I like 5.45 x 39.5s that run in the 74s. They are some of the most violent rounds I've ever seen. They have metal jackets, some solid, some hollow-point, with air in the tip then a lead core behind that. As soon as the tip of the bullit hits anything, even a piece of paper, it bends the round into a J-shape creating huge amounts of yaw. Keep in mind, this thing is traveling close to 3000 ft/sec, spinning and then suddenly turns into a J-shaped projectile on impact. It blows milk jugs filled with water apart with greater violence than can .308s fired through the H-K 91/G3 clone. If I could only have one gun, it would be the AK-74.:shooting:

Nice. Just figured, most go with the common but why should I have ever thought you would go with the common.:coffee: I have wondered about those rounds and how they perform. Sounds very, very cool!
I once fired a .223 and 7.62x39 into an abandoned telephone booth (the metal part that holds the money). The .223 went through it like a hot knife through butter. The 7.62x39 slammed it to the ground with force. It went through it without a problem but it spent most of the energy into it, unlike the .223.

I wish more companies offered the .223/5.56 in the 1/12" twist barrels like the original ARs had. They'd behave in a manner very similar to what the 5.45 does in that they'd tumble when they hit something. People were reporting ripping people's arms off when they hit them with a round fired from the original barrels. Then Military brass too concerned with accuracy got involved and insisted on barrels that over-stabilize the round. My son was telling me the other day that Norinco makes a M16-A1/AR-15 clone with a 1/12". I may have to see if I can find one of those to add to the collection.:rad: I like those black guns too.

In the world of aftermarket barrels today it's highly probable that someone makes or would economically make a 1:12 twist barrel for your current weapons.

Someone highly resembling Rock River Arms does just exactly that (but I think you have to get the whole upper, not just the barrel)

As long as nothing gets in the way of a .233 or a 5.56 bullet, they are pretty true in flight but a little wind or a twig knocks them off course. I enjoy the fact that not only does our military, local law enforcement, foreign governments and a shit pot of people in the US have firearms in that caliber. I know I'll always have ammo.

Yeah, but 5.56 weapons are like R6's - everybody has one. They're known as "bellybutton guns" for exactly that reason.
Where's the neato factor in that?
Yawn...Another AR-15 clone or generic bullpup. That's why when I went AR shopping, I bought an AR-10. Lots of people have .308s, NOT lots of people have AR-10s.
Come on, thrill me a little.

I want a .17 HMR auto pistol. OH YEAH.

I've gotten so used to hearing people knock on the 5.56 it's not even funny. Well, it is, cause most of it's true ;) But I've never had a problem with accuracy, just have to know how to tune iron sights....Although that's not even true anymore cause they're teaching freaking Kentucky Windage with the new ACOG's. wtf.
But more to the question I wanted to ask, Dr. Duc mentioned the accuracy/distance concerns with the 5.45? What are those?

.17 HMR this, .17 HMR that.....; I get so tired of hearing about such a revolutionary cartridge.
When I an avid varmit hunter my weapon of choice was a Remington 700 BDL in .17 Rem. 15 - 20 grain HP in excess of 4000 fps using a 1:10 twist. It makes the HMR look like a cap gun. I sold it for the very same reasons that I won't even consider the HMR useful. Barrels foul too quickly and too suceptable to the wind or anything in it's path. That said it was the most violent round I have ever seen when it found something soft and fleshy.
I still maintain that if I buy a new rifle I'm going for another 700 but this time in .220 swift.

The Russians are content with "combat" accuracy. If you can put rounds into 4" at 100 meters, it's accurate enough. My only complaint with the 5.56 is that they overstabalized it for accuracy and robbed it of its capacity to create bigger holes in people from cavitation. I think the Russians have it right. When the issue is combat/self-defense, I'll take combat accuracy and reliability over match-grade accuracy and less reliability any day.
The 5.45 round has good "density" and it can cause some problems with over penetration in some situations (hostages or innocent bystanders getting hit when the projectile goes through the bad guy, or a wall, etc.).

I don't care about being "cool."
My armory is just another extension of my not wanting to be with the rest of the sheeple.
I don't believe I ever said anything bad about the 5.56 - it's just generic and not for me. Since the round and the weapon are not directly personal defense oriented (for my purposes - unlike my 9mm pistols), there's some wiggle room for the fun factor.
But - it's pretty fucking kewl to show up at a range and put 20 .308s through the ten ring as fast as the .223 guys are :haha:

Oh, I know. I'm just taking a steamer on ya.:moon:
I really don't care what people have as long as they are happy and safe with their firearms. I've seen people shoot better with an open site 10/22 over a scoped 30-06. To me it's about safety and putting your bullets on target. People that can't do those two things should buy lots and lots of ammo. Then I know where to get it when I'm out.

What about those of us that can put lots and lots of ammo on target?
And yeah, my Great Grandpa was an amazing crack shot. I remember watching him shoot thistle blooms from about 100 yards away and about ten yards up with an old, beat stupid model 94 .32 Win Spl.

Seems to me 9mm pistols are about as generic as they come and for personal defense I wouldnt be too thrilled about carrying one unless I had the clip filled with hydrashocks. I would be much more comfortable carrying the small framed .40 for defense or in home the mossberg would be my choice. But everyone has their opinion.

I like the 9mm for the same reason most guys like .223: I can get ammunition at 7-Eleven.
I prefer Cor-Bon over Hydrashoks, but again to each their own.

10mm full-house Norma load behind 180 grain Golden Sabres in a Glock 20 with 15+2 magazines with one in the chamber. I don't know of any other pistol/revolver that can put more energy on a target without reloading. In the event that a reload is necessary, I have two extra 15+2 mags.
