Feel like a Noobie to the Sport...
Got this wicked Bike, and haven't even ridden it yet!
Not to worry though, I am getting closer. When I get a New (to me) Bike, I always go through the entire thing. After all, its just a few nuts & bolts that hold the whole machine together, and it doesn't take much to cause a failure, and only a spit second to find yourself on the asphalt! I like to know what I am relying upon to fly me across the deck.
Having torn apart most of the Bike for inspections, I was a bit taken aback by the lack of grace on the Internal Frameworks. Honda most certainly didn't put a lot of effort into this part, so I hope it is because they were too busy with the Performance Aspects of it!!
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image.jpg
Items addressed thus far include:
~Tightened Loose Motor Mount Bolts (4 were rather loose)
~Remounted 4 into 1 Exhaust Can (Shock Mount contact at Mid Pipe)
~Adjusted Chain/Cleaned & Waxed (Serious Whiplash Slack!)
~Installed new Spark Plugs, and Washed/Oiled K&N Air Filter
~Corrected Rear Brake Lever Lamp Switch (Lamp did not engage)
~Pulled the Bar Risers, and readjusted the Fork Tubes to correct height
Coolent, and Oil looked OK for the moment, so I ran it till the Fan kicked in, to set the idle, and see how it does run warmed up. Sounds like I will be adjusting the Valves tomorrow....
Aside from the Mechanical Aspects (which always rank highest in my book!), there are points that I will always address to suit my tastes, and this Bike is no exception:
~Pulled the cheap-ass LED Lamps off the Rear (See Post: Modification Disease)
~Restored the Head Lamp back to H4, and tossed the HID Lamps on CL
~Lifted the "CBR" Sticker off the Tail with a Heat Gun, and buffed off the glue with Wax.
I will give it about 200 miles before I address the Fluids, as it looks like that is as far as I can trust the Oil, and the Brake Fluid (Link-Brakes are such fun to bleed!), unless something crops up before then. It is more important to see what else needs to be corrected before then, as it always sucks to change the Oil, and then find you need to Adjust the Valves!:yell: Guess I should call it a night, cause that is what I'm doing in the morning....
I love a good 'ol Bike Project!

Might I ask; Why'd you ditch the HID's??? Thats one of the mod's high on my list for the ZX... They're supposed to be around 300 times brighter than Halogen bulbs
Monkey Wrench
03-21-2009, 10:00 AM
They are 300 times brighter!
In this case, these Bulbs are Blue, which draws attention of the unwanted kind, cause the cops want to hold a monopoly on that color... "Color Hogs!"
As well, unless you pay twice the price, basic HID only has one setting, so no High/Low Beams. Personally, if I am hauling down the Freeway and come up on a Sunday Driver yak'en on a distractor in the Fast Lane, I like being able to give them a flash or two so they WAKE UP!
Lastly, I don't want to get hit on some dark road cause I blinded an oncoming cage driver! These are really bright!!

Those all sound like well thought out reasons to ditch the HIDs that you had. The only thing that I would like to add, is that it is illegal to flash your high beams to indicate the intention to pass, or attempt to persuade a drive to yield the fast lane. (God knows I wish you could flash - run off the road - all of those Sunday-driving SOBs in the fast lane. :yell: ) Just wanted to give you a heads up, so you don't do it in front of a LEO.

I got HID's and dont have any problems with oncoming traffic. At night on my way to work, I get closer to the fog line and slow down a little bit so I can prepare for any dear that may pop out. I also happen to live in one of the most drunk driver friendly/redneck areas and cant say that Ive seen anybody so blinded by the HID's that they traveled into my lane.

I think I would keep them if they were White, and Bi-Xenten.
Or, I could modify them into the Bucket, and use them as Highs, with a H4 as the Low........
See where this goes??? Damn Dremel Tool!!!

After lifting off the Valve Cover, I discovered that a Special Tool is required to adjust the Rockers. Aw Nuts!
That rarely stops me, and I can usually find a way around needing it, but in this case, it really was required.
So I rounded up a few odds and ends:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image009.jpg
Set up a quick Welding Station:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image010.jpg
And ended up with this: A Bonified Monkey Wrench!
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image012.jpg
Worked pretty damn good too:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image013.jpg
Adjusted all the Rockers, of which a couple of the Intakes were rather tight (one had .000 Clearance!), and half of the Exhaust were very loose (calls for .007- 2 were as far out as .010!!). Bike is smooth, and quiet now.
Out of all the Bikes I have done this procedure to, this one was by far the easiest. It was a simple matter to gain access, and the only real trouble I had was the Coolent Hose ran across the front of the motor, directly over the Adjusters for the Exhaust Rockers.
I will say that it was a good sight to see it back together.

Now... if I could only remember how all the Fairworks go back on!!

Chain has less than 300 miles on it, so all it needed was a good wipe down with some Chain Wax, to pull the dust off it.
Wasn't to worried about the Carbs, cause it just visited St. Johns last August, where they mounted Rubber Hoses on the #1,2,and 4 Intake Boots, with Block Offs, to make the next Sync easier. Has a bit of a stumble to the Idle, but that could just be the Jetting, but having just ridden it, I can say that it doesn't appear in any of the Throttle Postions, and the Carbs are absolutely not fighting each other in any way...
In fact, this it the smoothest Sport Bike I have ever experience. Throttle response was crisp, and the Power Band seems to run as low as 3000 RPM, with a solid delivery of HP all the way up to Red Line! This Bike is frick'en FAST! Ready to pour on the heat at a moments notice, and even Roll On in 6th (although lacking full punch) was still seriously pulling. 55 MPH in 3rd Tacs at 5500, with a Red Line at 10,500- Wow!
Found it could do 40 MPH in 5th just as easily it would do 80 in 2nd, and I really didn't have enough road anywhere to find where it peaked out. More ridding will absolutely be required!
This Bike is a Road Rocket Power House, flys smooth as silk, and the only thing I can note about it that I didn't like was the sharp transition between Throttle Open/Closed, where the Compression really grabs hold of the Bike, insisting on more Fuel!
I'm not too sure about the Link Braking either, and will have to explore this futher. I may see about removing the pump/resivor/lines, and make it a Standard Braking System. It is kind of like having ABS on a Sport Bike! If I want to lock my Rear Brake for a second, I don't want it to effect the Front!?!
Very nice outcome to my wait, and an incredible Machine for being 15 years old, with 47K on the OD! Feels like it's barely Broke-In!!:rad:

Oh yeah, I like this board already lol
Monkey Wrench, I hear ya on the Honda LBS. Nothing like stomping on the brake and having the front come on too...Kinda makes it hard to slide if ya wanna, even if it's only one of the six front pistons.
Jaws Motorcycles in the UK sells a killer delinking kit for the Blackbird, you might check it out and see if it applies to your ride as well.
Or you can do a little line removal, port blocking and hole drilling to make it brake the way it ought to to begin with.

Finally! Someone who understands!!
I had to pull it apart. LBS really does suck for the most part. Honda's attempt at making Larger Bikes more comfortable for "Basic Riders".
I found that this was potentially a phnominal Sport Bike, if it were not for the LBS holding it back, and I was right.
I plead the 5th as to where I was testing the Bikes limits, but with the Brakes de-linked I found it would pull a 55 corner at 105 on entry, with an exit of 120. Being able to load the Rear Suspension without having the Front dip is absolutely critical, and quite frankly, LBS is the stupidest idea that Honda ever had... at least on a Sport Bike!
Here is how I did it:
First, I pulled off all the LBS Components (Proportional Valve, Secondary Master, and Additional Lines):
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image125.jpg
Next I Capped all the open ports that remained on all three Calipers:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image124.jpg
Lastly, I fabriacted a Stay Bracket for the Left Front Piviot Caliper:
(Its the darker black part- I used the Factory Brackets where I could)
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image123.jpg
This is where the Secondary Master was located... Note the Piviot Mounts:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image122.jpg
Sorry for the crappy shots here...
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk122/Ninja-Road-Warrior/Image121.jpg
This set-up drew the Caliper tight to the Fork Tube where it should have been, is in near perfect alignment with the Rotor, and matches the other side within 2-3 mm. Not bad for a Monkey Wrench!
Although this set-up does not include the Center Pistions while braking, it has tested solid/fixed, and proved funtional, providing a firm, smooth Brake application at even 120. I haven't tested it beyond that, cause I didn't really want to grab any at 150....

Well.... I won't need to worry about linking the third pistons at this point, because I traded off the Bike! Yep, its true.
Having made every repair it needed (which really wasn't much), and all the modifications I dared to make to it (she was too lovely to hack up with all my regular wacky mods), all that was left for me to do was push every envelope with it, which would have likely wrecked it, or I'd have had it confiscated!
A fitting end to this Thread, in which I took it in Trade without even riding it before hand, made lots of fun repairs to it, and then rode it like a total lunatic everytime I mounted it!
Last Tuesday I rode it up to Port Townsend, Washington, where I traded it for this '79 450SL Roadster:
