I was 3 lines into my introduction and the old lady accross the street knocked on my door, 4 lines in Windows decided to randomly restart my computer for updates. So I guess fate was telling me to stop yapping and just write "hi, I am fairly new to OR and was looking up some ride ideas and stumbled upon this forum- just what I was looking for! I hope to get some miles on my SV650s with some peeps @ Oregon Sportbike this spring and summer!"

I see your Bio says "skinny white boy"...

You best start on the light beer and lean pockets now if you're trying to claim the title. If you want "skinny guy on an SV" Just quit eating, Ghostly has that one in the bag.

Going from an R1 to an SV650 was quite a change. A little underpowered but its definitely a fun bike! Lookin to get a pipe on it this spring but other than that I think I'll leave it be.
I still think they should have skipped the 650 and 1000 and just made a 750 to compete with the rest of the 600cc sport class.

NICE! That looks awesome :rad: For what its worth I dumped thousands of dollars into my SV. Literally thousands  there were only a few things that are a must though.

1st: Have GP suspension in Oregon City rebuild your forks. The best $200 bucks you'll spend for control and feel.

2nd: Stainless front brake lines. Dont bother with the rear unless you want to but the forks and stainless lines are huge for control only $80.

3rd: Go down 1T on the front sprocket. Much more responsive and fun for only $15 bucks... :shhh: oddly enough you'll even be able to go faster

4th: pull that funky snorkel off the air box, put a K&N filter in and put .5" spacers under the tank mounts. Your bike will be able to breath for the first time for like $45...

5th: get a GIPRO with ATRE (Gear Indicator with Advanced Timing Retard Eliminator)from http://www.healtech-electronics.com/ you'll be amazed at how restricted the ignition maps are. This fools the bike into thinking its in 4th gear all the time which is an full blown balls out map. The gear indicator is really nice to have too. $150

6th: Do a FULL M4 system. A slip-on is nice for the sound but I figured that out the hard way too. A full M4 alone will turn it into a completely new bike. HUGE gains in power! I really liked the high mount version of the exhaust it just looked awesome but was told that the regular mount is going to get you more power... How much? Not enough, if you wana make it look sexy go with the high mount  I have some pictures of the high mount if you wana see it. http://www.m4exhaust.com/products/flash/M4_Exhaust.html anywhere from $700 - $1000 depending on what you want...

7th: Power Commander and Dyno. A PCIII usb came with a map for a full M4 system but trust me; a dyno will make a difference so around $400 for both...

OH YEA I FORGOT ONE
8th: An R6 throttle tube has a much shorter turn and it's a little deceptive. It feels like you've got more power but its just pouring it on faster - $10...

That would be everything I highly recommend for the SV totaling roughly around $1900 in parts. If you have the cash just laying around and dont want to do it yourself I'd recommend EDR to do all of that for you. They work on so many SV race bikes its sick  they do this kind of stuff weekly i'm sure and I know they'd do a great job. Talk with G-R1fun (http://www.oregonsportbike.com/forum/member.php?u=23) if you're thinking about having EDR do it for you.

Thanks Ma$ter E, I'm trying to save my money and you're screwing up my plan! I did the K+N air filter and may go with the M4 exhaust you mentioned. I haven't checked out your link but will after this- thanks for the sweet info. After I read somewhere the stock SV sounds like a lawn mower I've become kinda self-conscious! Is the front sprocket you talked about the # o' teeth that the neked SV comes with? I hear the neked gearing is alot more fun than the faired. I will look up EDR. Sounds like they may be able to help a mechanically challenged SV rider get some more juice from his goose (didn't mean that to be dirty but huh huh huuuu). Sorry, just trying to fit in with the freaks here!

$800 bucks for a full M4 carbon/ stainless system sounds like a deal after planning to spend $400 on just a slip-on. I think the suspension rebuild would be worth the $200 too. Great, here I go...

I dont recall what the 650s sprockets are but the naked was 15/45 and I went to 14/45. It was snappy before but after the TRE and gear it was a blast :rad: If you want to have a shop do the work for you I HIGHLY recommend you get in touch with Eric or Gary at EDR. They work on SV's all the time and would do a great job making a street legal race ready SV... When I get to the point I wana do some work to the ZX; EDR is going to be the shop I go to

If you'd like I can send you some pictures and movies of the SV so you can get an idea of what the M4 sounds like. But for the most part all that stuff is pretty cheap. The Exhaust and Dyno work is going to be the most spendy part of the whole project.

I caught that clip of the custom 250 Ninja exhaust! I think a 4 pipe 2 stroke style (MV Augusta had it I believe?) exhaust set up would be worth hearing and would look trick! Maybe

I gotta ask... Why did you go from an R1 to an SV?
Now don't get me wrong here. Nothing wrong with the SV, or the Mid-class Range in general, but wondered why you stepped down so far?

Great question. There's a more detailed story about a low speed crash and a stolen bike but what it really comes down to is- I kept hearing how much fun the SV650's were and @ $3500 for a slightly used, well maintained SV I figured I couldn't go wrong. I actually demo'd a Monster and felt like the extra cash was going towards the emblem on the gas tank. The sales guys were dousches too. I wasn't overly impressed by it and figured the SV would be a better financial decision. **I apologize in advance to the Ducati enthusiasts on this site, they really are great bikes if you have the $$.
After owning the SV for about a year now, I'd say they are a blast and definitely have earned a respectable score in the fun dept. For an experienced rider and an adrenaline junky they are underpowered and slightly boring. Its the throaty tone and the awesome torque that keep me trying to like this bike more than I really do.
Would I recomend an SV650? I already talked one friend into buying one and he loves it. It is his first bike though. Anyone that is used to bikes with more power will probably be entertained for one season and then trade it in for something with more power.

:plusone:

Thats pretty much how I feel about the whole thing. SV's are great! When I finally had the money and wanted to get something for my first real "sportbike" I had the CBR, R6, and GSXR in mind... Then my buddy at work told me to look into the SV and that I wouldn't be sorry... I kind of went out on a limb and trusted in his 40 years of riding experience and bought the SV. I AM SO GLAD I DID! EXCELENT first bikes. But as crjdirt mentioned they're kinda under powered so I started doing power mods looking for any HP I could find. But thats after 2 years of riding around stock and getting used to it all. I wish I could have kept mine :( I sold it for $4000 but when I added up all the goodies sprinkled on it I realized I sold the accessories for $3500 bucks and the bike for $500  Oh well  I was ready to move up to a bike thats meant to do the things I was trying so hard to do on the SV. :ride:

Well... I'm impressed! :clapping:
Most guys (and it really is the guys for the most part) who launch into the Sport Bike Arena without thinking things through end up on a Liter Bike as their First Rocket, and will convince themselves that they just need to master the beast rather than start out on something smaller, and more realistic to their skill level, as it represents some kind of bash on their Manhood. They may even wreck it, and will go get another Liter!
Takes a "conscience" person to realize the value of the SV650!

As well, no need to apologoze about a Ducati. They are fantastic machines, on the Track, but as a "personal ride" leave much to be desired! They are always in need of some kind of Expensive Service, a pain in the arse to work on, don't Store well, and if you knock it over in the Driveway the repairs can cost more than its worth!
As you said, if you got the dough...

I demo'd the 2008 S2R1000 in AZ. All of the reviews I found online for this dealer were pretty good so it may have been an isolated incident. Basically after my demo I returned to the shop and another customer walked in and said "I have cash and I want a fast bike". I was basically forgotten about and I walked out without even a goodbye from the sales guys. I wrote to the manager and he promptly got back to me and said if I returned they would treat me better and give me a deal. I bought my SV from a private seller the next day.

MarinesBiatch
03-26-2009, 12:56 PM
Yeah, I think I would've told the manager to piss off myself. A sale is a sale, regardless of how it's paid for. Sorry... I would've told everyone else about my experience, too. And posted on the internet's version of the Better Business Bureau. But hey, I'm a bitch like that. Hence the screen name.... :haha:

As you said, if you got the dough...

Pshaw. I love my Duke as a personal ride and am mostly just to busy to track it, but I'd definitely consider both. The new ones are most assuredly not always in need of "some kind of Expensive Service", in fact, mine has made it between (and slightly over) the service intervals without any problems! Amazing. ;) Any bike can be a pain to work on if you don't have the proper tools, and while the proper tools -are- somewhat difficult to obtain (not cheap), once you have them and the manual you're good. Just like with a Japanese bike.

I've had mine in storage for...6 months now? Something like that. It's been doing just fine and even started right up after 3 months of being neglected by the caretaker (he had a serious injury and could barely move, let alone negotiate a couple sets of stairs and the garage).

Insurance covers repairs and state farm is less than $200/6 months for an under-25 rider with a 999, so as far as replacing things...Well, don't drop it. :P

Don't take this as a personally attacking post, but people use the same arguments they've used for 30 years against Ducati and others when it just doesn't apply as much anymore. The same thing applies to domestic autos, where they continue to be dogged for problems that no longer apply.
