So i got a ticket for 87 in a 65 on I5 the other day. I didnt even know I could get the ticket being behind a cop. I was at least a few car lengths back and he was cruising in the fast lane passing people so I just jumped in and kept up. He gets over so i slow down and pass at 70 . Pulls me over and tells me hes sighting me for 87 in a 65 because he was going 87 when I was following him. I asked if he was just basing my speed off his spedometer or did he radar me and he just responded with I have a certified spedometer..
any way out of this?

There was a news story not long ago about the same thing happening to an attorney in Portland. If memory serves, the ticket stuck. It's against the law to exceed the speed limit. The law doesn't say it's OK to speed if you're behind a police car when you're doing it.

Only problem with that story is the judge may have disliked the att'y for some reason and decided to get back at him.
I'd still take that one to court.

True. To say he has a certified Speedometer isn't saying that he used it. I don't care how talent he might think he was. There is no way to speed forward and hit a radar on a car in back of you and see what speed they are going. That means he would have to more than a split second take his eyes off the road forward to look backwards.:2cents: worth of opinion.
Smells like fish to me. Good luck with that one..

It's all about pre-paid legal insurance. About $30/month and it's basically like having a retainer. Send me a pm, I can give you the contact info for it and you'll probably end up getting off. ;)

As much as I hate Paul's advertising on here like that, it has worked for people, and it's worth a shot. Plus, it's cheap!

Yeah, I do feel kinda like a sleezy ad-whore, and it's not meant to come off that way...I think it's worth the cost though, especially if you get involved in small business ventures where having an actual retainer can drain a lot of funds. Whatever.

Definitely PM him then.... A couple friends of ours are involved in it. Good guys, too... Other Marine buddies of MarineHawk's really, but one is an actual friend of mine, too.
Especially if you have a tendency to just get pulled over for being on a bike. I hate cops.......

Ahhh.... Everyone has a job, sometimes we dislike theirs (the police) but sometimes we have to eat the ticket, especially if we were in fact speeding. I think that "pacing" is a legal method for enforcement in regards to speeding violations. I have a couple of buddies that are civilian attornies too and you never know, as sometimes they can do some magic for you. Good luck with whatever course of action you go with (court or etc.).

The Mep knows this is old. However you can pace a car. Can be infront or behind. Little harder to do when vehicle is behind you but can do it.

like Mep said you don't actually have to be behind us for it to catch you. Most cars are equipped with a front rear cone system. As for being certified that doesnt mean much. However, you can ask when the last time he tested his equipment or checked it with his tunning fork. If he failed to do it that day you could use that as an arguing point. However, paceing is a way to check your speed so if he replies with that pucker up, say your sorry, and beg the judge for mercy.
