You say you'd recommend this for someone who's never even thought of going to a track before?

I arrived at the track to see a dismal scene of clouds, rain and puddles everywhere. I circled the pits and chose the open spot with the highest ground and least puddles and began unloading. Somewhere between the tool box and the stands I realized that no one else was unloading and setting up. Then I heard they might cancel the day, so I left everything else in the truck. We huddled under tents and in the rose cup room and came to the decision that at 8:30 someone would stick their head outside to check on the weather and we would make the final decision then.
Well, Tom Young, (don’t ever give that guy a microphone lol!) with his usual cheerful and positive attitude reported blue skies in Hillsboro (too bad weather was moving North!) and the weather report promised a dry afternoon. So the consensus was to stick it out. I finished setting up, registration and tech. With the weather sucking the confidence out of me, I made the wise decision to step down from B group and run with the C riders. I had my brand new Supercorsas on the bike and was not at all interested in scrubbing them in on a wet track. I decided to settle in for a long day of sitting around hoping for dry weather. My good friends talked me into at least going out and working on some things I had come to practice, so I geared up and tiptoed out for my first morning session.
I ended up in Brad’s (Liv2day) instruction group and the four of us went out for some easy laps. HOLY SH!T this track was slicker than owl snot on a door handle! Tires were sliding through T2 and the back straight and if I moved even an inch off the line that A & B groups had made I would start Hydroplaning. After the session I spoke with Brad about what I had hoped to improve for the day and we went out for the second session just the two of us so he could watch and show me a few things.
The track was drier as it had stopped raining and A & B groups were making a nice semi-dry line around the track. Brad followed me and then had me follow him, showing me some new lines through T2 and T4. I tried to work on my body positioning but found my knees were competing for the same space my chest and elbows needed to be. My knees were winning and it forced my torso to sit more upright. Brad gave me some foot positioning tips and I went out for the third morning session alone so I could work on it. I found it helped, but I was still very cramped and my hips were killing me. The new lines helped a lot and I was getting much smoother with the brakes and throttle. The line was starting to dry up so I pushed a bit more and found that Yep still slick as Bird Sh!t down the back straight.
Lunch came and went and the sun finally came out and dried up the track quite nicely. I was thinking about how to solve my body positioning problem and about ten minutes before my session started, I decided to move my rear sets to the down position, sacrificing ground clearance, but gaining legroom. It was like someone flipped a switch! That session was AMAZING. Things clicked, the tires stuck like glue and I felt incredible. I came in with the biggest sh!t eating grin.
My last few sessions were the most fun! It was warm and dry and I was able to run at pace with the things I had worked on in the morning. I was outbraking everyone going into T1 and T7 (steel braided lines made a big difference) and felt much faster than I had ever been. I was consistently in the top 5 riders in C group and several instructors told me I should think about riding in B group next time. Still have yet to touch a knee down, but I think as I improve my upper body position, that will come in time.
All in all, I salvaged a dreary day and was able to have a lot of fun and make a lot of progress with my riding. HUGE thanks to Brad for working with me and my pit buddies Amy, Del and Jon for supporting me and cheering me on. Ill eventually join you guys in the fast group one of these days… PSSR runs a great show and there were no incidents! Ill be back in August!

Congrats, Dave. :clapping: Glad to hear you had a good time, and that you played it safe. Always trust your gut when it comes to riding. :2cents:
With proper body position, the knee down is a product of speed, but so is crashing. Rush into doing one, and you may end up doing the other. :crash: You already know, just keep at it and it will happen. :ride:

I almost yard saled it right in front of my parents in T9! came in way faster than I ever had, I think I may have nicked my knee puck or something. it felt like the tires slid and I checked up for a moment, but kept going.

There is nothing about that lean angle that even hints of being raced!

No, it's the lack of mirrors, the number plate and possibly that it's on a track that gives to the apperance of being raced.
Of course we all know that track days aren't racing.
