View Full Version : Resistor Insulation?

I just had to install resistors on the wires running to my taillight. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to insulate them properly to prevent any heat damage to the plastics on my bike or the wires around them. I don't think they'll melt the plastic, more worried about the wires, but would like to make sure my bike is protected from even the possibility of heat damage.
Your help is appreciated.

On my yamaha, I used heavy zip ties to secure them to the rear sub-frame. Never had any problems. Just make sure the metal leads on the resistor have heat shrink tubing on them so they can't touch metal and short out:thumbup:

You can use the same heat resistant tape used on plastic near the exhaust. It keeps your pipe from melting your plastic. I know action sells it. Put it on the plastic not the resistor.

One technique is keeping the resistor from overheating. if you have enough room, try to mount your resistor on a metal plate. Aluminum works great. I used old computer CPU heat sink. This way the heat coming from the resitor will radiate towards the heat sink. Acts like a cooling system.

Easy. Ever heard of heater hose?
Cut it lengthwise. Voila! Finito.

Not advertising for this company but I thought I might share that a good company to go through to get blinker resistors is www.Ledtronics.com (http://www.Ledtronics.com) They have high quality aluminum case load resistors with mount holes, if you wanted to actually mount them to a frame piece.
They are 6 Ohm - 50 watt. They cost about 8.00 apiece but are worth it for the quality. I use them for my front blinker LEDS.
